Art Analysis

Finding stillness within the constant flow of change

Following an intensive ten-day Vipassana retreat, BNJ Photo began exploring the universal law of impermanence through the lens. By taking one photograph every minute for a quarter of an hour and assembling them into a single frame, the artist illustrates how everything evolves, changes, and eventually fades. The meditator, Louisiane Desbrosses, sits as a fixed point of observation while the city’s infrastructure and transportation systems dissolve into streaks of color and kinetic energy.

The resulting image is a study of equanimity—the ability to meet any situation, whether pleasant or difficult, with mental detachment. The dance of light and shadow created by passing traffic serves as a visual metaphor for the fleeting nature of existence. By placing a moment of deep introspection within a busy urban landscape, the work invites a shift in perspective, encouraging the viewer to see the constant flux of the physical world as a path toward mental clarity.
