Art Analysis
Visualizing the synesthetic echoes of a childhood record collection
Inspired by evenings spent listening to her mother’s record collection in near-total darkness, Carruth recreates the internal light show sparked by Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. With only a small lamp in a distant room to ground her, the artist began to see music as a physical presence, imagining vibrant hues emanating from the lively violin elements of the Czardas and other classical recordings.
The composition is a thoughtful collage of memory and medium, featuring a detailed illustration of a violin and bow completed in 2018. By surrounding this central figure with fluid watercolor shapes and abstract forms, Carruth captures the emotional depth of a young mind finding its creative voice through the rhythm of a record player, translating auditory energy into a permanent visual harmony.
The work uses abstract forms to represent the lively violin elements and rhythms of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody.
A bold selection of hues, including deep purples and oranges, translates the warmth of a personal recollection into a vivid visual experience.
Lerson uses digital art creation to stack disparate elements like fishing boats and boxing imagery into a cohesive conceptual piece.
