Art Analysis
A vertical exploration of tactile geometry and layered form
In Paper Studies 15, the artist utilizes the portrait orientation to build a vertical dialogue between shape and space. The work functions as a structural investigation, where the edges of each element define the boundaries of the next, creating a sense of architectural stability within a flattened plane. By focusing on the raw qualities of her materials, Böhmer highlights the interplay between light and the physical relief of the medium.
The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, leaning instead into a refined arrangement that feels both intentional and grounded. The viewer is encouraged to observe the nuances of the paper’s surface and the way the vertical alignment directs the gaze upward. It is a study in restraint, proving that a limited palette and clear geometric logic can produce a deeply resonant visual experience.
The artist uses simplified forms and a non-literal palette to convey the feeling of a city rather than its exact likeness.
The portrait orientation focuses the viewer's attention on the closeness of the subjects, heightening the sense of a private world.
The work evokes a calm, focused mood through its emphasis on the physical qualities of paper and shadow.
