Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Layered symbols in monochrome
This composition places the robed figure at the center, viewed from a low angle that makes her the largest element. The American flag fills the background, its stars and stripes stretching to the edges of the frame. Light beams radiate from behind the figure, cutting through textures that look like splatters and smoke. These grey and white marks overlap both the figure and the flag, creating a dense, weathered appearance across the entire scene.
The lettering on the tablet, reading "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI", is partially hidden by the white light and textured overlays. While the torch is held high in the upper right, the dark folds of the robes and the thick horizontal stripes of the flag provide a heavy base for the image. The shades of black and grey shift throughout the piece, with the brightest white concentrated around the figure's head and the raised arm.
