This is a chapter illustration for "Daar waar die sterre is"; I intended them to be more literal illustrations of the chapter headings, in this case, "Ek is niemand" (I am nobody). I’ve been intrigued by the story of L'Inconnue de la Seine ever since I came across her during research for my art history course at university. I’m thankful that the author allowed me to use the girl’s image in my illustration work; I did not expect her and our proofreaders to have such an emotional reaction to the smiling face with the words "I am nobody" captioned above it. Graphite on paper.
