Born in Kimberley, South Africa, in 1992, Celeste Groenewald developed an early affinity for natural history through the town's libraries and museums. This foundation, combined with a deep study of Francisco de Goya’s etchings, shaped her desire to give physical form to the intangible world of dreams and internal emotions. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Free State in 2015, Groenewald remained in Bloemfontein to continue her practice. Her background includes experience as a museum guide and book illustrator, roles that inform her meticulous approach to the craftsmanship of image-making and her exploration of diverse media.

Visual voice

Groenewald’s work bridges the gap between the natural world and the subconscious, often drawing on the detailed observation found in natural history. Her aesthetic is defined by a focus on the craftsmanship of the image, translating fleeting dreamscapes and emotional states into tangible, evocative forms.
