Coastal Hillside Village
Carla Daly
Art Analysis
A rhythmic mosaic of homes climbing toward the sea.
In this work, Daly explores the verticality of a coastal settlement, arranging dwellings in a dense, cheerful mosaic that climbs the hillside. The squared orientation provides a stable frame for the varied architectural shapes, allowing the viewer to wander through the rows of windows and rooftops that overlook the water. Each structure feels distinct yet connected, contributing to a sense of shared life and communal warmth.
The artist uses a flattened perspective to emphasize pattern and placement over traditional depth, turning the village into a rich tapestry of form. By focusing on the structural harmony of the hillside, the piece captures the quiet energy of a town built between the land and the sea, inviting a close look at the small details that make a place feel like home.
The 1:1 aspect ratio creates a sense of stability and focus, drawing the viewer into the center of the natural patterns.
The piece explores the structural identity of Malmo through its functional harbor buildings and skyline.
Daly treats the village as a collection of shapes, using the repetition of squares and triangles to build visual rhythm.
