Carla Daly approaches cartography as a form of storytelling, using a vibrant illustrative style to define the Great Lakes State. By focusing on the unique silhouette of Michigan, the artist populates the landscape with symbols that represent regional identity, turning a traditional map into a warm, accessible exploration of place. The vertical composition emphasizes the distinct relationship between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, framing the water and land as a unified, cheerful environment.

Every element within the frame serves to ground the viewer in a specific sense of home or travel. The artwork avoids the clinical precision of a standard atlas, opting instead for a hand-drawn quality that feels personal and inviting. It functions as both a navigational guide to the imagination and a colorful tribute to the geography of the Midwest, capturing the essence of the region through clear lines and thoughtful placement.
