In this work, Deificus approaches cartography as a form of portraiture, isolating the physical boundaries of Lyon against a stark background. The composition relies on the interplay between the solid mass of the city’s footprint and the clean typography that anchors the frame, creating a sense of place that is both grounded and abstract. By removing traditional map markers like street names or topographical lines, the artist focuses entirely on the organic yet engineered silhouette of the land.

The use of a portrait orientation emphasizes the verticality and stature of the city, treating the map as a graphic icon rather than a navigational tool. The minimalist aesthetic highlights the rhythmic edges of the riverbanks and districts, inviting a quiet observation of how urban spaces occupy the earth. It is a study in restraint, where the negative space is just as vital to the composition as the dark ink of the cityscape itself.
