Towering stone among glass skyscrapers
This black and white photograph arranges the Boston shoreline into distinct horizontal layers. The lower half of the frame is filled with the masts and hulls of numerous sailboats resting on the water. Above them, the city skyline rises, dominated by a light-colored clock tower that stands out against the darker, rectangular shapes of the surrounding skyscrapers. The composition uses a low-angle perspective from the harbor, looking directly toward the shore where the dense architecture of the North End and Financial District meets the waterfront.
The monochrome tones emphasize the different textures of the city, from the smooth surfaces of the modern buildings to the detailed stonework of the Custom House Tower. The lettering at the bottom of the image provides a clear label for the location, anchoring the visual information with the words BOSTON and UNITED STATES. The sailboats in the middle ground create a busy, detailed pattern that contrasts with the large, solid blocks of the buildings in the upper half of the frame.
This piece belongs to a larger series of urban impressions that captures famous landmarks in major world cities, including London, Paris, and New York, using a consistent monochrome style.
