Stacked lettering over a distant shore
This monochrome photograph presents the city as a narrow horizontal band between the water and the sky. The composition is divided into three distinct layers: the dark water in the foreground, the dense row of buildings and trees in the middle, and a vast expanse of sky that fills the top half of the frame. The viewpoint from across Lake Michigan places the viewer at a distance, making the skyscrapers appear as a compact silhouette against the light, wispy clouds.
Large, thin-lined letters are placed directly over the clouds, dominating the upper portion of the image. The city's name is split into two levels, with the letters arranged in a square-like formation. These tall, transparent characters allow the texture of the sky to show through. While the buildings and trees create a dark, solid line across the bottom third, the pale tones of the sky and the delicate lines of the text create a lighter feeling at the top.
This piece belongs to a series of skyline views, distinguishing itself from the Monochrome version by the addition of the large typographic elements.
