Art Analysis

Central gate within mottled borders
This composition centers the Brandenburg Gate inside a dark, irregular shape that stands out against a light, mottled background. The stone columns and the chariot statue on top are rendered in dark greys and blues with touches of yellow, suggesting a night scene. The surrounding area fills the square frame with soft shades of light blue, purple, and white, creating a decorative watercolor effect around the architectural subject.
The word BERLIN appears in white capital letters in the upper left portion of the central dark shape, identifying the city where this landmark stands. The edges of the central shape are uneven and rough, contrasting with the straight lines of the columns and the detailed silhouette of the horses. The eye moves from the bright lettering to the lit areas of the gate, which is positioned directly in the middle of the frame.
