Art Analysis
The deliberate weight of a singular, vertical gesture.
In this composition, Böhmer explores the physical properties of the brushstroke, allowing the weight and direction of each application to define the visual space. The portrait format encourages an upward momentum, guiding the eye through a thicket of overlapping tones that vary in opacity and edge quality. This focus on the singular mark highlights the tension between the deliberate hand of the artist and the fluid nature of the medium.
The work functions as a study of contrast and depth within a restricted framework. By isolating these abstract forms against a neutral ground, Böhmer emphasizes the tactile qualities of the paint—its ridges, its thinning trails, and its sudden clusters. The result is a grounded exploration of form that finds its strength in the simplicity of its execution and the clarity of its vertical arrangement.
The portrait orientation focuses the viewer's attention on the closeness of the subjects, heightening the sense of a private world.
The piece centers on the visible evidence of the artist's hand, where the sweep of the brush creates a sense of immediate motion.
The human form is reimagined as a series of shapes and textures, blurring the line between figurative portraiture and non-representational art.
