Art Analysis

The Silvered Masonry of Toronto’s Largest Anglican Landmark

This photograph centers on the third incarnation of St. Paul’s Bloor Street, a Toronto landmark since 1860 and the largest Anglican church in the city. Designated as a Heritage Property in 1989, the building at 227 Bloor St E is rendered here with a focus on its Gothic Revival elements and immense scale. Carson uses the vertical orientation to honor the height and history of a space designed to seat over 2000 people, grounding the viewer in the physical weight of Canadian architectural heritage.

Captured in 2018 with a Canon EOS 60D, the image was reprocessed through Silver EFEX Pro to achieve a deep, tonal black and white conversion. By removing color, Carson highlights the luminous lighting effects that dance across the facade, drawing attention to the ornate decorative design and the weathered textures of the stone. The result is a disciplined architectural portrait that balances technical skills proficiency with an appreciation for the ethereal nature of light within a sacred space.
