Orlando Sobalvarro was a central figure in the Nicaraguan avant-garde, recognized for his foundational role in the Praxis Group. After training at the National School of Fine Arts in Managua under Rodrigo Peñalba, he expanded his practice through studies in New York and Washington, D.C., between 1969 and 1971. His work is defined by "telluric abstraction," a movement that bridges the physical landscape of Nicaragua with deep cultural and social inquiry. Throughout his career, Sobalvarro received high honors, including the Cultural Independence Order “Rubén Darío.” His compositions often draw from the rugged geography of the Chontales and Amerrisque mountains, integrating these geological forms with recurring motifs like owls and snakes. These elements serve as a visual language for exploring regional identity and the raw, tectonic textures of the earth.
