Art Analysis
Finding the infinite within the human silhouette
Kiernan begins her process with a blind application of water, a method that relies on intuition rather than sight to define the initial composition. When black ink du chine and acrylic Prussian blue are introduced to the wet surface, they bleed into organic, atmospheric shapes that suggest both anatomical structures and the vastness of deep space. The resulting silhouette feels fluid and alive, a dark expanse where the edges of the self blur into the surrounding void.
Once the ink settles, Kiernan meticulously applies individual stars and galaxies using gouache and white ink. These tiny, precise points of light provide a sharp contrast to the soft, bleeding gradients of the background, illustrating the literal and metaphorical stardust that composes our physical beings. It is a quiet meditation on our place in the universe, finding a sense of calm in the realization that we are made of the same materials as the celestial bodies above.
The artwork suggests a profound link between the observer and the vast, supernatural reaches of the universe.
The work merges the structural precision of the human body with liquid, marbleized textures to redefine the physical form.
The layering of Prussian blue ink and white gouache creates a sense of immense distance within the confines of a portrait.
The dark, ink-heavy palette combined with delicate white points of light evokes a feeling of quiet, cosmic solitude.
