Danish-born artist Gugger Petter developed a distinct practice centered on her iconic woven newspaper technique. After training at the Academy of Fine Art in Rome and the Den Frie og Merkantile Kunstskole in Copenhagen, she relocated to California in 1986 to continue her exploration of tactile media. Her work translates newspaper into tight tubes, forming large-scale figurative portraits and urban scenes. These pieces, which investigate the relationship between anonymity and presence, are held in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum and have been exhibited at the Royal Danish Embassy.

Visual voice

Her aesthetic is defined by the structural density of woven newspaper tubes used to build two-dimensional scenes. She employs low-angle perspectives and Renaissance-inspired figures to explore the balance of presence and anonymity.
