Nicola Mountney’s practice is rooted in a rich history of craftsmanship and cultural immersion. Originally from London, she spent her early career working for major costumiers, where she specialized in period costume for film and television. This background in historical detail preceded a move to Tuscany in 2006. There, while managing a Buddhist retreat center in the Apennine mountains, she dedicated ten years to the rigorous study of Buddhist thangka painting, a traditional form of scroll art that demands precision and patience.

Visual voice

Her work represents a deliberate departure from traditional iconography toward a personal exploration of color and detail. By isolating tiny fragments of landscapes found in ancient thangka scrolls, she creates a fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. This approach mirrors the influence of Giuseppe Castiglione, utilizing intricate linework and vibrant palettes to bridge two distinct artistic traditions.
