Jorge Maia’s photographic journey began in Lisbon, where a two-year course and the discovery of Ansel Adams’ work ignited a lifelong interest in the landscape. His early practice was rooted in the darkroom, where he shot and developed over 2000 rolls of black-and-white and reversal film. This technical foundation in analog processes informs his meticulous approach to light and composition. Travel serves as the primary catalyst for Maia’s work, from early trips across European capitals to recent campervan expeditions through Holland and Belgium. Now a LEE Filters sponsored photographer, he focuses on long-exposure and night photography, specifically through his "Night Dreams" project. His portfolio documents the varied textures of Iceland, Madeira, and the Mediterranean coast.

Visual voice

Maia’s work is characterized by the use of ND filters to create smooth, ethereal water and sky textures within natural landscapes. His aesthetic balances the starkness of black-and-white film with the technical precision of digital long exposures, often capturing scenes in the low light of night.
