Bill Fink is a Los Angeles-based visual artist who has spent decades refining a self-taught approach to experimental image-making. Born in 1954 and educated at Cal Poly Pomona, Fink served as a professor at Pasadena City College while developing his signature "Time and Matter Photography." His practice moves beyond traditional silver or ink, focusing instead on the inherent history found within physical materials. Through his Finkart brand, he creates images using the actual substance of his subjects, including human hair, soil, and cremated ashes. This method investigates the relationship between identity and the physical world, turning matter into a visual record. Fink, who has held solo exhibitions at the Lankershim Art Center, is also the founder of the SEEDS Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to promoting experimental photography through his proposed International Experimental Photo Image Center.

Visual voice

Fink’s aesthetic is defined by the literal integration of subject and medium, where the texture of the material dictates the image's form. His work explores the passage of time and the preservation of identity through the use of organic and elemental matter.
